Dandruff

Dandruff

Dandruff is associated with seborrheic dermatitis (SD), which causes itchy and flaky skin. However, it occurs only on the scalp. It’s flaky, itchy, and oily. The causes are as follows-

  • Secretions from the sebaceous glands
  • Fungal colonization on the surface of the skin
  • Over-brushing the hair on the head causes excessive friction with the sensitive skin of the scalp
  • A yeast called Malassezia. It irritates the scalp and causes excessive proliferation of skin cells.

Treatments for dandruff are home remedies, shampoos, and medical treatments.Shampoos containing ingredients such as ketoconazole, coal tar, and salicylic acid are effective.

Factors That May Influence Seborrheic Dermatitis

The incidence and severity of seborrheic dermatitis may be influenced by-

  • People with other illnesses – for example, neurological disorders (particularly Parkinson’s disease, stroke, paralysis) or HIV may suffer from more severe seborrhea dermatitis
  • Emotional or physical stress
  • Genetic factors
  • Seasonal – Seborrheic dermatitis is usually worse in winter.
  • Parkinson’s disease and AIDS increase both the risk and severity of seborrheic dermatitis
